Summary

Ridges made for improved drainage and soil depth within an orchard of probable 19th century date were visible as earthwork banks in a plot to the south of Greenhill Way, on aerial photographs of 1950 and on visualisations derived from lidar data captured between 1998 to 2017.

Parallel ridges were visible as north-west to south-east aligned earthworks under light tree cover on aerial photographs of 1950. The closely spaced banks are on average 6 metres wide and are aligned towards a loop in the stream immediately to the south. They are interpreted as banks made to enhance drainage and provide additional depth of soil within an orchard.
The plot in which the banks are visible is not depicted as an orchard on the Tithe Map for Kingsteignton but is on the Ordnance Survey 25-inch first edition map. The banks were therefore probably created prior to circa 1880 and were probably a 19th century expansion of orchards previously associated with the former Green Hill Farm.
The plot is now heavily wooded, and the banks obscured from view on images derived from aerial photographs of 2015. The banks remain visible as subtle earthworks on images derived from lidar data captured between 1998 and 2017 but may be partial and damaged.
