'Tumulus' shown.

Ordnance Survey Archaeology Division, 1951 - 1953, SS54NW7 (Ordnance Survey Archaeology Division Card). SDV342688.

1. Tumulus marked on Ordnance Survey 6 inch map of1903
2. An ancient mound of about the 9th century on the north-west side of Hillsborough.
3. Visited on 18/09/1953. No remains of a tumulus could be found. The hill consists of outcropping rock, which if at one time covered with turf covered could have resembled a tumulus.

Walls, T., 1999 - 2000, The Archaeology of Hillsborough Ilfracombe. A Management Plan, 16, 22 (Post-Graduate Thesis). SDV342294.

There is reference to a barrow at SS53274791, in the northern part of the headland. It seems probable that this is a natural feature. Other details: Figure 9.

Collings, A. G. + Manning, P. T. + Valentin, J., 2007, The North Devon Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. Phase 1. Archaeological Survey. Summary Report, No. 1370 (Report - Assessment). SDV339712.

Tumulus marked on os 6" 1903. Later identified as an 'ancient mound' of 'about 9th century' (os). Visited 1953: No remains of a tumulus could be found. The hill consists of outcropping rock, which if turf covered could have been mistaken for a tumulus.

Beamish, M., 2011, Archaeological Walkover Survey and LiDAR Study, Hillsborough Promontory Fort, Ilfracombe, Devon (Report - Survey). SDV348722.

Photographed. Originally identified on Ordnance Survey mapping of 1890 as a tumuli, this feature has been discounted as of natural origin, and no discrete mound is visible. The area is much overgrown with blackthorn.
