Summary

Two cut features identified during a watching brief for an extension. One of the pits contained very occasional small fragments of Roman tile. The smaller pit contained no finds.

Pye, A., 2010, Windwhistle, Retreat Drive, Topsham: Watching Brief (Report - Watching Brief). SDV362888.

A watching brief was undertaken on this development, as t lies in an area which has previously produced Roman material - mostly during the construction of the housing & services during the 1930s and subsequently.

A 500mm deep pit was visible in the southwest side of the trench but not in the northeast side. Lower fill was a brown loam with occasional charcoal flecks; upper fill was a more pebbly similar loam with very occasional small Roma tile fragments. Overlain by a very fine loam which partly filled the top of the pit, and continued northwards as a layer. No other finds.

A small 220mm deep cut sealed by the fine loam layer described above. Clean brown loam fill, no inclusions of finds.
