Full description

Cox, J. + Thorp, J. R. L., 2015, Berry and Vincent, 18 Union Street, Crediton: Historic Building Assessment (Report - Survey). SDV362926.

This is the largest building to the rear of Berry and Vincent, 18 Union Street, with the larger southern part rising two storeys high with an attic in the roofspace (Fig.18). At first sight its asymmetrical east-facing front looks like a two-phase building but closer examination suggests it was all built together. It is probably an original building dating from c.1860.

Nevertheless the layout is essentially of two parallel blocks on an east-west axis. The southern block is both wider and taller than the northern one. The ground floor level is mostly an open space interrupted only by structural posts. However there is a stone-walled compartment at the back (west end) which overlaps the division between the two blocks. Its domestic-looking window openings and doorways suggests that this may have been an office. Access to the first floor is by means of an external stair rising against the wall marking the western property boundary. The bottom four steps are granite, whilst the rest are timber with this stair sheltered by a corrugated iron roof. The north side was open and guarded by a plain timber handrail. An internal stair rises to the attic level from the back of the stair landing. The first floor level includes an early, if not original, room in the centre and against the south wall. (See report for full details).
