Full description

Stretch of road marked as High Street.

Margary, I. D., 1967, Roman Roads in Britain, 117 (Monograph). SDV24025.

A Roman road is thought to have run westward near the coast from Charmouth via Timber Hill, Lyme Regis, Colyford, Newton Poppleford and Clyst St Mary to Exeter. The route after Lyme Regis is largely that followed by the A3052. From Sidford to Stowford the road bears the name High Street. The Saxon word 'straet' meant a paved or metalled road, indicative of Roman origin.

Ordnance Survey, 2019, MasterMap 2019 (Cartographic). SDV362729.

Road marked as Sidford High Street.
