'Peppercombe Lear' marked on the Ordnance Survey 1886 map and modern map. J. Wright's The English Dialect Dictionary defines a lear as 'A channel made in the beach for vessels to discharge their cargoes', in this case presumably limestone and coal for the limekiln (citing Wright, J., 1902, III, 555).
