Name:Hut east of settlement at Shaugh Moor

Summary

A hut circle of probable Bronze Age date is recorded from field investigation and aerial survey as a roughly circular hollow or terrace enclosed by an earthwork bank. It is possibly associated with an irregularly shaped hut circle settlement to the west. The hut circle is identifiable as an earthwork on aerial photographs of 1946 and clearly visible on digital images derived from aerial photographs of 2016.

An isolated hut is located 30.0 metres east of enclosure which is terraced into the hillside and 4.5 metres in internal diameter. The broad wall is lined with orthostats and roughly coursed, whilst the entrance is orientated south and protected on this side by a line of earth-fast boulders.

(Visited 03/12/1997) SX55846343. A sub-circular hut circle built into the slope. It measures 8.0 metres in diameter with a level interior 4.7 metres (north-south) by 4.2 metres with 0.7 metres high front and back scarps. The partially tumbled but substantial walling comprises a boulder/stone core with inner and outer facing slabs and boulders a maximum 0.8 metres high. The entrance may have been in the north (upslope) side where one transverse slab survives.

Visited 08/09/2019. The description is good and no change noted. There is a 90% covering of bracken but no damage is being caused. The site is stable. Photo taken.

A stony bank up to circa 1.5m wide is visible as an earthwork under scrub vegetation on aerial photographs of 1946 and clearly visible on digital images derived from aerial photographs of 2016. The bank encloses a roughly circular hollow or terrace up to circa 4.5m across.
The circular feature is interpreted as the remains of a hut circle of Bronze Age date, possibly associated with an irregularly shaped hut circle settlement just under 30m to the west (MDV12779).
A narrow break in the northern edge of the bank might be evidence of an entrance. The south-eastern quadrant of the bank appears in poorer condition than the rest and might have been somewhat spread.
The banks are identifiable only as fragmentary earthworks on visualisations derived from low resolution lidar data captured in 2013.
