HER Number:MDV125926
Name:Hut circle associated with enclosures at Shaugh Moor

Summary

A hut circle of probable Bronze Age date is recorded from field investigation and aerial survey as a roughly circular hollow or terrace enclosed by an earthwork bank on the north-facing slopes of Shaugh Moor. The hut circle is identifiable as an earthwork under scrub vegetation on aerial photographs of 1964 and is more clearly visible as a subtle earthwork on digital images derived from aerial photographs of 2007. It is identifiable on visualisations derived from low resolution lidar data captured in 2013.

(Visited 02/12/1997) SX55656348. A fairly well-defined if robbed hut circle built into a slight slope. It measures 6.7 metres (north-south) by 7.6 metres and the level interior is some 4.8 metres in diameter with a 0.7 meter high back scarp. The wall comprises a stone and boulder core which is faced in places by boulders and some slabs up to 0.6 metres high; it is damaged on the downhill side. The position of the entrance is not clear; a short boulder/stone wall extends from the south side for 4.0 metres.

A bank circa 1.0m wide is visible as an earthwork under scrub vegetation on aerial photographs of 1964, enclosing a roughly rectilinear hollow or terrace up to circa 6.5m across on the north-facing slopes of Shaugh Moor.
The visible earthwork is interpreted as the remains of a hut circle of Bronze Age date, possibly associated with an enclosure to the west (MDV12953).
The bank and hollow are more clearly visible on digital images derived from aerial photographs of 2007 and are identifiable as earthworks on visualisations derived from low resolution lidar data captured in 2013.
