Full description

Ordnance Survey, 1880-1899, First Edition Ordnance 25 inch map (Cartographic). SDV336179.

The visible earthworks correspond in part with ditches banks and gulleys depicted on the Ordnance Survey 1880s First Edition map. A chimney and possible building platform are depicted in close proximity.

Environment Agency, 1998-2017, LiDAR DTM data (1m resolution) EA: South Devon Coast to Dartmoor, LIDAR SX5559 Environment Agency DTM 01-JAN-1998 to 31-MAY-2017 (Cartographic). SDV361470.

Linear ditches or gulleys are visible.

Hegarty, C., Knight, S. and Sims, R., 2019-2020, The South Devon Coast to Dartmoor Aerial Investigation and Mapping Survey. Area 2, Avon Valley to Plymouth (AI&M, formerly NMP) (Interpretation). SDV362982.

Linear ditches or hollows 3 to 15m wide are visible as earthworks on digital images derived from lidar data captured between 1998 and 2014 on the south and east-facing slopes under Fernhill Wood, Shaugh Prior. The detail visible on the available lidar imagery is limited by dense tree cover in this area and the AIM survey transcription is limited to defining an extent of area across much of the site.
The earthworks correspond in part with ditches and mounds depicted on the Ordnance Survey 1880s First Edition map. A chimney, recorded separately as MDV69358, is depicted within the extent of the visible earthworks.
The earthworks are interpreted as the remains of tin mining activity of 18th to 19th century date, possibly opencuts. They might incorporate the site of a mill at 'Wheal Julian' mine, recorded separately and approximately located circa 150m to the south (MDV62634).
Further work including site visits and measured survey are recommended to clarify the character of the earthworks.
