Full description

The visible earthworks do not correspond with any pit depicted on the Ordnance Survey 1880s First Edition map.

Three earthwork pits are visible on aerial photographs of 1951 and digital images derived from lidar data captured between 1998 and 2014 on the east facing slopes of Fernhill Wood, Shaugh Prior. The pits measure between 8 to 18m across and are closely spaced crossing the contours of the slope.
The earthworks do not correspond with any pits depicted on the 19th or early 20th century maps available to the survey. They are interpreted as prospecting pits of 18th to 19th century date.
