Summary

An earthwork mound of possible later prehistoric date and funerary function is visible on digital images derived from lidar data captured between 1998 and 2014 on the south-west facing slopes of Hooksbury Wood, Shaugh Prior. The earthwork has probably been destroyed by modern quarrying.

The visible earthwork does not correspond with any mound depicted on the Ordnance Survey 1880s 25inch First Edition map. The plot is depicted as plantation.

An earthwork mound was visible on digital images derived from lidar data captured between 1998 and 2014 on the south-west facing slopes of Hooksbury Wood, Shaugh Prior. The mound was roughly circular and measured up to 14m in diameter.
The earthwork does not correspond with any features depicted on the 19th or early 20th century maps available to the survey which depict this area as plantation throughout the mid to later 19th century, although the south-western side might have been truncated by field boundary of possible medieval date. A depression or hollow up to 6m across in the top of the mound might be evidence of historic investigation.
The mound is interpreted as a possible barrow of Bronze Age date. It has probably been destroyed by the western extension of modern quarrying.
