Full description

Dyer, M., 1998, Archaeological Observtion at St Andrew's Church, Halberton (Report - Watching Brief). SDV339470.

A subterranean burial vault was discovered during the excavation of a soakaway pit. It was brick-built, circa 2.60 metres by 2.10 metres, with a shallow vaulted roof, 2.20 metres high. The long axis was orientated north-west to south-east. There was a blocked entrance in the west wall, with a stairwell or sunken access leading down to it. The remains of four coffins with coffin plates were observed inside. A soakaway trench was dug as an alternative to the pit.
