Irregularly shaped banks, up to 65m long, and a ditch, circa 8m wide, are visible as earthworks on visualisations derived from lidar data captured between 1998 and 2017. The flat-topped banks are located either side of a range of building shown here on the mid-19th century Parish Tithe map and labelled as ‘Way’. The southern bank corresponds with two land parcels (853 and 854) and the northern bank falls within a larger land parcel (845). These are recorded as ‘House Barton Garden’, ‘Orchard in Garden’ and ‘Orchard’, respectively, on the accompanying Tithe Apportionment. The banks are interpreted as possible medieval platforms for buildings associated with Way, but which had been demolished and turned into orchards and a garden by the mid-19th century. The irregularly shaped ditch, which extends in a westerly direction from Way, is of uncertain function, but may form part of a drainage ditch. The settlement of Way, which is shown on the Tithe Map, had been demolished by the time of the late 19th century Ordnance Survey First Edition map.
