Full description

Ordnance Survey, 1880-1899, First Edition Ordnance 25 inch map (Cartographic). SDV336179.

The visible earthworks do not correspond with any pit depicted on the Ordnance Survey 1880s 25inch First Edition map.

A pit is visible as an earthwork.

An irregularly shaped pit circa 80 by 40m in size is visible as an earthwork on the east-facing slopes under Mill Wood, Cornwood, overlooking the combe of the Piall River.
The visible earthwork does not correspond with any pit depicted on the 19th or early 20th century maps available to the survey.
It is interpreted as the remains of a quarry or extractive pit that had ceased to be used prior to circa 1880.
