The visible earthworks do not correspond with any pit depicted on the Tithe Map for Sparkwell, but do fall within an area of waste.

A shallow and irregularly shaped pit circa 40m across is visible as an earthwork on the south-east-facing slopes east of Sparkwell.
The visible earthwork does not correspond with any pit depicted on the 19th or early 20th century maps available to the survey but does fall within a small area depicted as rough ground. The area remains under scrub vegetation on digital images derived from aerial photographs of 2018.
It is interpreted as the remains of a small quarry or extractive pit of probable post-medieval to 19th century date that had ceased to be used prior to circa 1840, regressed to waste ground and has remained uncultivated into the 21st century.
