HER Number:MDV126174
Name:Holloways across Roborough Down, Buckland Monachorum

Summary

Several curvilinear interlacing earthwork ditches, visible on aerial photographs taken from 1946 onwards and on visualisations of lidar data captured between 1998 and 2017, are interpreted as medieval or earlier holloways that link Horrabridge to the higher ground of Roborough Down. Many appear to have gone out of use by the mid-19th century.

Numerous curvilinear earthwork ditches, between approximately 2 and 4 metres in width, are visible on aerial photographs taken from 1946 onwards and on visualisations of lidar data captured between 1998 and 2017. There are many interlacing parts and the ditches are in fragmented sections and branch out on the western, higher end. They are interpreted as holloways that link Horrabridge and the eastern side of Roborough Down to the higher ground at what is now Pound House. Two main orientations can be discerned, the more substantial run north-east to south-west and appear to cut those running in a more east to west direction, which may be earlier. Their origin is uncertain, and could be pre medieval. Many appear to have gone out of use by the mid-19th century and are not depicted on the available historic mapping. One of the trackways depicted on the late-19th century maps has been transcribed, as it connects to other branches of holloway that had not been mapped.
Only two individual elements of holloway had been recorded previously and these have been associated as child records, but have not themselves been amended as part of the survey.
