Summary

A large but shallow pit, circa 100m by 125m in size is visible as an earthwork on aerial photographs of 1955 and digital images derived from lidar data captured between 1998 and 2017, east of Drakeland Corner.
The visible earthwork corresponds with an area of enclosed waste ground depicted on the Tithe Map for Plympton St Mary, listed as plot 823, Little Waste, furze waste etc. Hachures depicted on the south-east side of the plot on the Second Edition map support the interpretation that the earthwork had been excavated as a pit prior to the early 20th century
The visible earthwork and 19th to early 20th century map evidence might support the interpretation that the pit is probably the remains of a former quarry probably of post-medieval to early-19th century date that had ceased to be exploited and reverted to waste prior to circa 1840.
