Full description

Ordnance Survey, 1880-1899, First Edition Ordnance 25 inch map (Cartographic). SDV336179.

The westernmost visible earthwork corresponds with a pit depicted on the Ordnance Survey 1880s 25inch First Edition map.

The earthworks closely correspond with pits depicted on the Ordnance Survey 1880s 25inch Second Edition map.

Irregularly shaped pits are visible as earthworks circa 10m wide and up to circa 50m long crossing the west-facing slopes south of Lobb Farm in a linear arrangement for circa 140m.
Only the westernmost visible earthwork corresponds with a pit depicted on the Ordnance Survey 1880s 25inch First Edition map. The remaining pits closely correspond with pits depicted on the Ordnance Survey 1880s 25inch Second Edition map.
The pits are interpreted as extractive pits or prospecting pits that were probably therefore cut between circa 1880 and 1904.
The pits remain visible as earthworks on visualisations derived from lidar data captured between 1998 and 2017.
