Hegarty, C., Knight, S. and Sims, R., 2019-2020, The South Devon Coast to Dartmoor Aerial Investigation and Mapping Survey. Area 2, Avon Valley to Plymouth (AI&M, formerly NMP) (Interpretation). SDV362982.

Four irregularly shaped pits 15-20m across are visible as earthworks under light tree cover on aerial photographs of 1946 on the south-west spur of Bottle Hill. The two westernmost earthworks correspond closely with rectilinear pits depicted in an area of rough ground on the Ordnance Survey 25in First Edition map, and therefore predate the late 19th-century. The two easternmost pits are not depicted and might have ceased to be used and reverted to rough ground by the late 19th-century.
The visible earthworks are probably the remains of extractive pits and may represent an early phase of extraction on Bottle Hill, predating the shafts recorded elsewhere in this area (such as the adjacent shaft MDV47981), and are perhaps of later medieval or post-medieval date.
The pit remains visible as an earthwork on digital images derived from lidar data captured between 1998 and 2017 and are schematically depicted on the current Ordnance Survey MasterMap. The earthworks are obscured by dense tree cover on digital images derived from aerial photographs of 2016.
