HER Number:MDV126236
Name:Leat in the Tory Brooke combe, Sparkwell

Summary

Curvilinear ditches, probably the remains of a leat or leats of 19th century date, are visible as earthworks on digital visualisations derived from lidar data captured between 1998 and 2017, on the west-facing slopes of the Tory Brooke combe. Sections of the watercourse might also have operated as a catch-meadow.

Full description

Ordnance Survey, 1880-1899, First Edition Ordnance 25 inch map (Cartographic). SDV336179.

Ordnance Survey, 1904 - 1906, Second Edition Ordnance Survey 25 inch Map (Cartographic). SDV325644.

The visible earthworks correspond with a water channel depicted on the Ordnance Survey 1880s 25inch Second Edition map.

Environment Agency, 1998-2017, LiDAR DTM data (1m resolution) EA: South Devon Coast to Dartmoor, LIDAR SX5558-SX5559 Environment Agency DTM 01-JAN-1998 to 31-MAY-2017 (Cartographic). SDV361470.

Curvilinear ditches are visible as earthworks.

Ordnance Survey, 2019, MasterMap 2019 (Cartographic). SDV362729.

A channel remains depicted on the current Ordnance Survey MasterMap base mapping.

Hegarty, C., Knight, S. and Sims, R., 2019-2020, The South Devon Coast to Dartmoor Aerial Investigation and Mapping Survey. Area 2, Avon Valley to Plymouth (AI&M, formerly NMP) (Interpretation). SDV362982.

Curvilinear ditches circa 2m wide and up to 1.4km long are visible as earthworks on digital visualisations derived from lidar data captured between 1998 and 2017, on the west-facing slopes of the Tory Brooke combe.
Two parallel channels are visible following the contours of the combe for circa 300m, centred on circa SX55825896. The lower of the two channels corresponds with a watercourse depicted on the Ordnance Survey Second Edition 25inch map but not the First Edition map. This might support the interpretation that the channel post-dates circa 1880.
The channel appears to feed into the fish pond at Newnham Park (MDV49649) and might have been created solely to supply the pond. The channel runs near parallel to a mill leat immediately to the west, which supplied water to Loughtor Corn Mills to the south (MDV13503). It may be that this mill leat previously supplied the fishpond but a separate source was required to avoid conflict of supply.
A catch meadow is recorded immediately to the north of the leat earthworks (MDV125985) and it is possible that the section of parallel channels centred on circa SX55825896 also operated as a catch meadow.
A channel remains depicted on the current Ordnance Survey MasterMap base mapping.
