HER Number:MDV126238
Name:Track or footpath in Newnham Park

Summary

A possible track or footpath, potentially of medieval to post-medieval date is visible on aerial photographs of the 1940s and 1950s as an earthwork hollow and banks in Newnham Park. Subtle earthworks remain visible on visualisations derived from lidar data captured between 1998 and 2017.

A curvilinear hollow circa 5m wide and 560m long is visible as an earthwork on aerial photographs of 1946 in Newnham Park.
The visible earthworks do not correspond with any features depicted on the 19th or early 20th century maps available to the survey and it is probable that they are the remains of a route, probably a track or footpath, that predates the creation of the deer park in 1700.
The possible route appears to be oriented on and run alongside a relict rectilinear enclosure to the north, with which it may be contemporary.
This might be the same as a linear feature identified by geophysical survey and recorded as part of MDV113235.
