Name:Rectilinear banked enclosure in Newnham Park

Summary

A rectilinear banked enclosure of possible medieval to post-medieval date is visible in Newnham Deer Park as an earthwork on aerial photographs of the 1940s and 1950s. Subtle earthworks remain visible on visualisations derived from lidar data captured between 1998 and 2017.

Full description

Ordnance Survey, 1880-1899, First Edition Ordnance 25 inch map (Cartographic). SDV336179.

The visible earthworks do not correspond with any features depicted on the Ordnance Survey 1880s 25inch First Edition map.

Banks are visible as earthworks defining a rectilinear enclosure.

Subtle earthwork banks are visible.

A rectilinear enclosure 105m by 75m in size is visible in Newnham Deer Park on aerial photographs of 1946 and 1955. The enclosure is defined by banks up to 8m across, presumably spread by later improvement. A possible narrow ditch is visible on the eastern edge of the enclosure and a trackway flanks the western edge (MDV126238).
The visible earthworks do not correspond with any enclosure depicted on the 19th or early 20th century maps available to the survey and it is probable that they are the remains of an enclosure or pound that predates the creation of the deer park in 1700.
A plantation boundary bank appears to abut the eastern edge of the enclosure indicating that the banks survived as a substantial landscape feature into the post-medieval period.
The function of the enclosure is unknown, and it is unclear if it is the same as that referred to as ‘a subrectangular pound to the east [of the deer park]’ in relation to the rabbit warren immediately north of the park (MDV65390).
Subtle earthwork banks remain visible on visualisations derived from lidar data captured between 1998 and 2017 but otherwise little evidence of the enclosure remains visible.
