Irregularly shaped pits are visible as shallow earthworks up to circa 37m across on aerial photographs of 1946 onwards, to the north-west of Battisford, Sparkwell. Two of the shallow pits are surrounded by or cut into subtle banks or mounds, whilst three smaller pits are possibly cut into the eastern east of the mound.
The mound centred at circa SX57245502 corresponds with a pit depicted on the Ordnance Survey 1880s 25inch First Edition map. The earthworks fall with a plot (1314) on the Plympton St Mary Tithe Map named as Quarry Field.
The visible earthworks are interpreted as extractive pits or small quarries and associated spoil heaps of probable post-medieval to early 19th-century, that had probably ceased to be used prior to circa 1840.
The earthworks remain identifiable on visualisations derived from lidar data captured between 1998 and 2017.
