Six irregularly shaped pits are identifiable on visualisations derived from lidar data captured between 1998 and 2017 as earthworks of varying size under dense tree, on east facing combe slopes north of Applethorn Slade.
The visible earthworks do not correspond with any pits depicted on the 19th or early 20th century maps available to the survey, but both fall within a plot listed as woodland on the Tithe Map for Plympton St Mary (Plot 1258, Pasture, Timber etc).
The earthworks are interpreted as extractive pits or small quarries of probable post-medieval to 19th century date that had ceased to be used and integrated into woodland prior to circa 1840.
