Monument Type(s) and Dates

  • EXTRACTIVE PIT (Post Medieval to XIX - 1540 AD to 1840 AD (Between))

Full description

South West Heritage Trust, 1838-1848, Digitised Tithe Maps and Transcribed Apportionments (Cartographic). SDV359954.

The visible earthworks do not correspond with any pits depicted on the Tithe Map for Plympton St Mary. The plot is recorded as woodland for timber, nad the pit has therefore probably passed out of use.

Ordnance Survey, 1880-1899, First Edition Ordnance 25 inch map (Cartographic). SDV336179.

The visible earthworks correspond with a pit depicted on the Ordnance Survey 1880s First Edition 25inch map.

Environment Agency, 1998-2017, LiDAR DTM data (1m resolution) EA: South Devon Coast to Dartmoor, LIDAR SX5756 Environment Agency DTM 01-JAN-1998 to 31-MAY-2017 (Cartographic). SDV361470.

A pit and mounds are visible as earthworks.

Ordnance Survey, 2019, MasterMap 2019 (Cartographic). SDV362729.

A pit remains depicted.

Hegarty, C., Knight, S. and Sims, R., 2019-2020, The South Devon Coast to Dartmoor Aerial Investigation and Mapping Survey. Area 2, Avon Valley to Plymouth (AI&M, formerly NMP) (Interpretation). SDV362982.

An irregularly shaped pit is identifiable on visualisations derived from lidar data captured between 1998 and 2017 as an earthwork up to circa 40m across, under dense tree on the east facing combe slopes south east of Langage Cross.
The visible earthworks correspond closely with a pit depicted on the Ordnance Survey 1880s 25inch First Edition map, and which remains depicted on the current OS MasterMap base map.
However, the pit extends further downslope than depicted, probably incorporating an access track that passes between two mounds, probably spoil associated heaps.
The earthworks are interpreted as an extractive pit or small quarries of probable post-medieval to 19th century date that had ceased to be used and integrated into woodland prior to circa 1840.
