Irregularly shaped pits are identifiable on visualisations derived from lidar data captured between 1998 and 2017 as earthworks up to circa 35m across, under dense tree on the north facing combe slopes under Chaddle Wood. The pits are centred on circa SX56095666 and surrounded by irregularly shaped mounds on all sides, but particularly downslope. Subtle earthwork mounds or disturbed ground extends for circa 100m west of the pits.
Smaller, roughly circular pits are identifiable further downslope at circa SX56105670, SX56155672 and SX56175672.
The visible earthworks do not correspond with any features depicted on the Tithe Map for Plympton St Mary or the Ordnance Survey 1880s 25inch First Edition map.
The earthworks are interpreted as extractive pits or small quarries of probable post-medieval to 19th century date that probably predate the creation of Chaddle Wood.
The larger pits and mounds appear to overly and therefore probably postdate a curvilinear ditch, possibly a trackway, which also appears to be cut by the smaller pits downslope.
