Five irregularly shaped pits are identifiable as earthworks on the north facing slopes under Chaddle Wood. A pit at circa SX56455661 is visible as an earthwork under light tree cover at the edge of Chaddle Wood on aerial photographs of 1946.
Although depicted on the current OS MasterMap base map, this feature is not identifiable on visualisations derived from lidar data captured between 1998 and 2017 and might have been levelled during the development of the field to the south-east as Langage Science Park.
Four further pits are identifiable on the lidar derived visualisations either side of a spring-fed stream descending the slopes of the north-facing combe.
The earthworks are interpreted as extractive pits or small quarries of probable post-medieval to 19th century date that had ceased to be used prior to circa 1840.
