Sub-oval pits, between 7m and 30m long, are visible on visualisations derived from lidar data captured between 1998 and 2017. The earthworks occupy an area of circa 2 hectares within Western Torrs. They do not correspond with any pit features shown on the available historic maps, although a quarry and limekilns are shown in this area on the mid-19th century Parish Tithe Map and limekilns and earthworks labelled as ‘Old Quarry’ and ‘Quarry’ are shown on the late 19th century First Edition map. Structures labelled as ‘Kiln’ and earthworks labelled as ‘Pit (dis)’ are also shown in this location on the 2019 Ordnance Survey MasterMap. The earthwork pits are therefore interpreted as post-medieval or early 19th century quarries and possible prospecting pits which had passed out of use by the mid-19th century. They were possibly associated with MDV21288, MDV21289, MDV99669 and MDV99670. The earthworks are not visible on other available aerial imagery owing to dense tree cover of Western Torrs.
