Dock at the east end of West Quay (1.1). Date 1984. Possible outline visible.
Buck, C., 2006, Gawton Mine, Devon: Archaeological Assessment, 51; Fig 2; Site 50 (Report - Assessment). SDV344672.
The 1867 survey map shows the Dock in detail, although it seems to be extant on the much earlier 1784/6 Gardner Map. This is likely to have been the earliest feature within the site. The dock is now difficult to see. It is completely infilled with silt and grass has grown over the surface (possibly covering surface remnant quay/dock surface tiles), however the edges of the quay can just be made out with a trained eye (working back from the rounded northern end of the dock where it meets the river).
It is recommended that as part of any future projects, the infilled quay be dredged of silt to reveal the sides and opening of the quay again. This would also aid drainage of the quay area to the south which is quite wet.
Buck, C., 2006, Gawton Mine, Devon: Impact Assessment Report, 28-29; Site 50 (Report - Assessment). SDV348353.
It is the long term intention of the landowner to excavate the river silt from the dock to reveal its location, extent and sides as shown on a number of archive maps. However, at present the dock is likely to be outside the project area boundaries, and the intention is to construct a temporary fence line. It will probably be necessary for limited drainage works to take place to ensure the adit stream drains into the infilled dock.
