The Smithy wheel pit
This feature is not very clear on the ground or on any of the archive maps, but appears to have been approximately 6.0 metres long, by 0.7 metres wide and 2.0 metres deep and as such it is questionable as to whether this was actually a wheel pit at all. No bearing slots on any of the walls to suggest a wheel was ever in position. A possibility suggested is that this pit may have housed a power bellows for the smithy, although Buck (2006) suggests this slot may have been a route for the tailrace from the incline plane wheel pit.
At present, the pit is choked with vegetation; some clearance of this might make interpretation easier.
