HER Number:MDV126491
Name:Wheel pit at Birch Tor and Vitifer Mine, North Bovey

Summary

A nineteenth century wheelpit sited near the main area of surface activity at Birch Tor and Vitifer Tin Mines. An archaeological field survey in 2001 recorded its dimension as 14.5 metres by 1.8 metres, and surviving to a depth of one metre. The walls are constructed from very large pieces of masonry. Water was diverted to the waterwheel from a branch of the main mine leat (Monument HOB UID 1339538) via the tailrace of another wheelpit sited further uphill to the west (Monument HOB UID 1339538). The waterwheel powered the flat rods for pumping at Dunstan's Shaft.

(Visited 29/03/2001) A wheel pit sited at SX 6815 8090 near the main area of surface activity at the 19th-20th century Birch Tor and Vitifer Tin Mine. The waterwheel was used to supply motion to the flat rods which powered the underground pumping via Dunstan's Shaft. It measures 14.5 metres by 1.8 metres but only survives to 1 metre deep as much masonry has tumbled inside. The walls are constructed from very large pieces of masonry. Water was diverted to the wheel from a branch of the main mine leat (Monument HOB UID 1339538) via the tailrace of another wheel pit sited further uphill to the west (Monument HOB UID 1339538).

Ordnance Survey, 2022, Mastermap 2022 (Cartographic). SDV364674.

Long narrow rectangular feature shown on modern mapping.
