Full description

South West Heritage Trust, 1838-1848, Digitised Tithe Maps and Transcribed Apportionments (Cartographic). SDV359954.

The visible earthworks do not correspond with any features depicted on the Tithe Map for Plympton St Mary.

Ordnance Survey, 1880-1899, First Edition Ordnance 25 inch map (Cartographic). SDV336179.

The visible earthworks do not correspond with any features excplicitly depicted on the Ordnance Survey 1880s 25inch First Edition map, but might in part correspond with a row of trees south of Elfordleigh House.

Environment Agency, 1998-2017, LiDAR DTM data (1m resolution) EA: South Devon Coast to Dartmoor, LIDAR SX5458 Environment Agency DTM 01-JAN-1998 to 31-MAY-2017 (Cartographic). SDV361470.

Hegarty, C., Knight, S. and Sims, R., 2019-2020, The South Devon Coast to Dartmoor Aerial Investigation and Mapping Survey. Area 2, Avon Valley to Plymouth (AI&M, formerly NMP) (Interpretation). SDV362982.

Two hollows or shallow ditches circa 9 to 12m wide are visible as subtle earthworks circa 80m and 120m long, crossing the contours of a gentle south-west facing slope the south and east of Elfordleigh Hotel Golf and Country Club. The hollows may be flanked on their north and south sides by low and narrow earthwork banks circa 4m wide.
The visible earthworks do not correspond with any features depicted on the Tithe Map for Plympton St Mary. The eastern section on the hollow might be aligned on bend in the route of the driveway to Elfordleigh House, whilst the western section matches, in part, a tree alignment depicted on the Ordnance Survey First Edition 25inch map.
It is possible that the hollow is evidence of a former route or driveway associated with Elfordleigh House of a previous dwelling in this area. However, it seems more probable that the earthworks are the remains of former field boundaries that predated, and were possibly cleared for, the establishment of parkland at Elfordleigh in the 18th century (MDV107620), the hedgerow planting retained as parkland trees, as depicted on Ordnance Survey First Edition map.
