  • FIELD BOUNDARY (Early Medieval to Post Medieval - 1066 AD to 1750 AD (Between))

Full description

Ordnance Survey, 1880-1899, First Edition Ordnance 25 inch map (Cartographic). SDV336179.

The visible earthworks do not correspond with any boundaries depicted on the Ordnance Survey 1880s 25inch First Edition map.

Royal Air Force, 1946, RAF/106G/UK/1190, RAF/106G/UK/1190 RP 3228-3229 27-FEB-1946 (Aerial Photograph). SDV363067.

A curvilinear ditch is visible as an earthwork.

Griffith, F. M., 1989, DAP/MO, Devon County Council DAP/MO 26-JUN-1989 (Aerial Photograph). SDV363228.

Cropmarks of curvilinear ditches are visible.

Environment Agency, 1998-2017, LiDAR DTM data (1m resolution) EA: South Devon Coast to Dartmoor, LIDAR SX5457-SX5458 Environment Agency DTM 01-JAN-1998 to 31-MAY-2017 (Cartographic). SDV361470.

A curvilinear ditch is visible as a truncated earthwork.

Hegarty, C., Knight, S. and Sims, R., 2019-2020, The South Devon Coast to Dartmoor Aerial Investigation and Mapping Survey. Area 2, Avon Valley to Plymouth (AI&M, formerly NMP) (Interpretation). SDV362982.

A curvilinear ditch circa 4 to 10m wide and up to 300m long is visible both as an earthwork and cropmark of a ditch, crossing a north-facing slope west of Elfordleigh Hotel Golf and Country Club on aerial photographs of 1946 and 1989.
The visible ditch does not correspond with any features depicted on the 19th century maps available to the survey. However, the northernmost 190m of the relict earthwork and cropmarks are aligned on significant bends in field boundaries. This might support the interpretation that the ditch is also evidence of a former field boundary, possibly of medieval to post-medieval origin, that was removed prior to the mid-19th century.
Since the 1960s the field pattern in this area has been reorganised with the land south of the new boundary to the south subject to more intensive arable cultivation. Consequently, only the northernmost circa 100m of the ditch remains identifiable as an earthwork on visualisations derived from lidar data captured between 1998 and 2017 but is clearly identifiable as cropmarks visible on aerial photographs of 1989.
Narrower curvilinear ditches, visible to the north-east of the relict ditch are interpreted as possible trackways and are recorded separately.
