Name: | Extractive pit southwest of Choakford Farm, Sparkwell |
---|
Summary
An irregularly shaped pit interpreted as a post-medieval or early 19th century extractive pit which had likely passed out of use by the mid-19th century is visible as an earthwork on aerial photographs taken in 1946. A slight earthwork hollow is visible here on visualisations derived from lidar data captured between 1998 and 2017, suggesting that the pit has been largely levelled.

An irregularly shaped pit, circa 47m long by 45m wide, is visible as an earthwork on aerial photographs taken in 1946. The visible earthwork corresponds with a dotted line enclosure shown on the mid-19th century Parish Tithe Map. It is therefore interpreted as a post-medieval or early 19th century extractive pit which had likely passed out of use by the mid-19th century. A slight earthwork hollow is visible here on visualisations derived from lidar data captured between 1998 and 2017, suggesting that the pit has been largely levelled.
