The visible earthworks do not correspond with any faeture depicted on the Tithe Map for Plympton St Mary.

In irregularly shaped pit circa 40m long and 25m wide is visible as an earthwork on aerial photographs of 1955 at Elfordleigh Wood during a period of tree clearance.
The visible earthworks do not correspond with any features depicted on the 19th century maps available to the survey, Elfordleigh Wood listed as ‘Timber, Coppice, Plantation’ on the Tithe apportionments for Plymton St Mary.
The pit is interpreted as a possible extractive pit of post-medieval date, that probably passed out of use by the early 19th century.
The pit remains identifiable as an earthwork on visualisations derived from lidar data captured between 1998 and 2017.
