Two banks of medieval to post-medieval date are visible during a period of tree clearance at Elfordleigh Wood on aerial photographs of 1955 as earthworks circa 3.5m wide, and 117m and 220m long respectively.
The visible earthworks do not correspond with any features depicted on the 19th century maps available to the survey. Elfordleigh Wood is listed as ‘Timber, Coppice, Plantation’ on the Tithe apportionments for Plympton St Mary.
The banks are interpreted as a possible plantation banks of medieval to post-medieval date, that survived as relict earthworks under the tree cover of Elfordleigh Wood to the mid-19th century.
With the exception of a section circa 90m long centred at SX54795791, the banks are not identifiable as earthworks on visualisations derived from lidar data captured between 1998 and 2017 and have probably been largely levelled.
