Full description
Laing-Trengove, D., 2019, Buddle Spring and Fountain Head, Hatherleigh (Correspondence). SDV363273.
Buddle spring and fountain head located in the High Street, Hatherleigh. It would appear that the stone wall may have been constructed in the later 18th or early 19th century before construction of the house situated behind the wall where formerly orchards. Prior to the addition of the fountain head in 1993-94 there was a timber door in the wall to the right of the decorative metal tap, allowing access to pipework. This was blocked in when the fountain head was attached. According to John Smale Short's History of Hatherleigh, produced in the 19th century, the town is well supplied with good spring water; a constant stream is always running about the centre, even in the driest day of summer. The well was made in the year 1658, as appears by the inscription. It is called by the inhabitants The Buddle, which was thoroughly repaired in the year 1813.
