HER Number:MDV126704
Name:Field boundary and extractive pit east of Strashleigh, Ermington

Summary

Earthworks of linear and curvilinear banks and ditches and a sub-circular pit, interpreted as a relict medieval or post-medieval field boundary, with post-medieval or 19th century extractive pit, are visible on visualisations derived from lidar data captured between 1998 and 2017. The earthworks had likely passed out of use by the mid-19th century.

Earthworks of linear banks and ditches, between 3m and 5m wide and northeast to southwest aligned, are visible on visualisations derived from lidar data captured between 1998 and 2017. The earthworks are in keeping with the historic field pattern depicted in this location, which is characterised as Barton fields and are therefore interpreted as a relict field boundary of medieval or post-medieval date. Contiguous with these earthworks to the east is a sub-circular pit, circa 16m diameter, with outer curvilinear bank interpreted as evidence of a possible post-medieval or 19th century extractive pit which truncates the field boundary. The earthworks do not correspond with any linear or pit features shown on the mid-19th century Parish Tithe Map, or on later available historic maps, suggesting that they had passed out of use by this time.
