Full description

Ordnance Survey, 1880-1899, First Edition Ordnance 25 inch map (Cartographic). SDV336179.

The visible earthworks do not correspond with any pit depicted on the Ordnance Survey 1880s 25inch First Edition map.

Royal Air Force, 1946, RAF/106G/UK/1190, RAF/106G/UK/1190 RP 3253-3254 27-FEB-1946 (Aerial Photograph). SDV363067.

An earthwork pit and mound are visible.

Environment Agency, 1998-2017, LiDAR DTM data (1m resolution) EA: South Devon Coast to Dartmoor, LIDAR SX5560 Environment Agency DTM 01-JAN-1998 to 31-MAY-2017 (Cartographic). SDV361470.

An earthwork pit and mound are identifiable.

Bluesky International Ltd/Getmapping PLC, 1999-2017, Pan Government Agreement Aerial Photographs, Next Perspectives APGB Imagery SX5560 03-MAY-2007 (Aerial Photograph). SDV363087.

The earthworks are obscured by tree cover.

Hegarty, C., Knight, S. and Sims, R., 2019-2020, The South Devon Coast to Dartmoor Aerial Investigation and Mapping Survey. Area 2, Avon Valley to Plymouth (AI&M, formerly NMP) (Interpretation). SDV362982.

An irregularly shaped pit circa 24m across is visible on aerial photographs of 1946 as an earthwork on the east-facing slopes north of Fernhill Wood. A similarly size mound is visible immediately downslope of the pit.
The earthworks are interpreted as the remains of a small quarry or extractive pit of probable post-medieval date.
The visible earthworks do not correspond with any pit depicted on the Ordnance Survey 25inch First Edition map but do fall within an area depicted as rough ground. It is probable therefore that the pit passed out of use prior to the 1880s.
