Curvilinear ditches are visible as earthworks circa 1.2m wide and up to circa 100m long on aerial photographs of 1946, closely following the contours of the south-east facing combe slopes east of Staplers Barn.
The channels, spaced circa 15 to 25m apart, are probably the gutters of a former catch meadow of post-medieval to early 20th century date. Such systems used springs or streams to irrigate combe slopes rather than the valley floor. Originating in the medieval period they were in widespread use in Devon in the 19th and early 20th centuries.
The gutters appear to be under pasture and are visible as very subtle earthworks on aerial photographs of 1951, perhaps indicating the system had been out of use for some time by this date.
The gutters remained identifiable as earthworks on visualisations derived from lidar data captured between 1998 and 2017.
