Six curvilinear ditches are visible as earthworks circa 1.3m wide and up to circa 80m long on aerial photographs of 1946, closely following the contours of the south-facing slopes south of Higher Collard Farm.
The channels are probably the gutters of a catch meadow of probably 19th to early 20th century date.
Such systems used springs or streams to irrigate combe slopes rather than the valley floor. Originating in the medieval period they were in widespread use in Devon in the 19th and early 20th centuries.
The ditches are not clearly visible as earthworks on digital images derived from aerial photographs of 2002 but remain identifiable on visualisations derived from lidar data captured in 2013.
