Full description

EXCLUDING DITCH, Untitled Source (Report - Survey). SDV162420.

Vis=14/4/1982 (greeves). Two very large ditched pillow mounds aligned downslope on upper edge of belt of dense rhododendrons. The lower obscured by undergrowth, the upper is c.35m long 9m wide.(excluding ditch).

SX 59966124 Pillow mound. Pillow mound, aligned up/down slope towards east end of Rook Wood, with wide but shallow ditch on either side. Approximately 20m in length, 8m - 10m wide, generally 1.5m high, but damaged at northern end by burrowing animals. Ditch approximately 2m - 2.5m wide. Three large trees grow on the mound with a coppice stool at southern end.

A ditched mound is identifiable as an earthwork.

A pillow mound, an artificial rabbit burrow of probable medieval to post-medieval date, is visible on aerial photographs of 1948 onwards as a detched earthwork mound circa 34m long and 10m wide, aligned across the contours of the west facing slopes below Rook Tor. The enclosing ditch, made to aid drainage, is 2 to 4m wide.
The mound is largely obscured by vegetation on images derived from aerial photographs of 2007 but remains identifiable as an earthwork on visualisations derived from lidar data captured between 1998 and 2017.
