Full description

Devon County Council, 1838-1848, Tithe Mosaic, approximately 1838-1848 (Cartographic). SDV349431.

The southern group of linear anomalies is to the north of and broadly parallel with a field boundary shown on the Tawstock Tithe Map. However, a stream is also shown running along the boundary and the geophysical anomalies could, therefore, represent a palaeochannel.

GSB Prospection, 2000, Barnstaple Western Bypass (Report - Geophysical Survey). SDV347349.

A gradiometry survey undertaken along a section of the proposed Barnstaple Western Bypass recorded two groups of ditch-type linear anomalies in Area H suggestive of archaeological ditches. However, it was noted that the the broad nature of the responses and the position of the anomalies, particularly the southern group which lay along the valley bottom is more indicative of a natural rather than an archaeological origin, possibly reflecting an old stream channel. It was noted that the land in the southern part of Area H was low lying and waterlogged at the time of the survey.
