Four roughly circular pits in an east-west aligned row are visible on aerial photographs of 1946 as earthworks, on the western edge of Crownhill Down. The pits measure from circa 4 to 10m in diameter and are surrounded by spread banks up to 6m wide, probably upcast spoil. The pits remain visible as earthworks on digital images derived from lidar data captured between 1998 and 2014, but digital images derived from aerial photographs of 2016 indicate that the westernmost pit, at circa SX56035986 has probably been destroyed by an expansion of modern open cast mining.
