Summary

Prospecting pits of medieval to post medieval date are visible as earthworks on aerial photographs of 1946 onwards and digital images derived from lidar data captured between 1998 and 2014, as earthworks on the western edge of Crownhill Down. The pit earthworks have probably been partly destroyed by modern open cast mining.

Vis=18/6/1979 (edwards,c. ) an 'l' shaped collection of nine pits centred at sx56155988 flanks a medieval field boundary. Leng 3m, widt 2m, dept 0.5m.

Oval and roughly circular pits up to circa 5m across are visible as earthworks on the western edge of Crownhill Down on aerial photographs of 1946. The pits remain visible as earthworks on digital images derived from lidar data captured between 1998 and 2014. They are interpreted as prospecting pits of medieval to post medieval date.
The pits are clustered to the west of linear arrangements of closely spaced pits also interpreted as prospecting pits and might represent a further phase of prospection to identify the extent of the tin resource in this area.
The pit earthworks have probably been partly destroyed by modern open cast mining.
