Full description

Devon County Council, 1838-1848, Tithe Mosaic, approximately 1838-1848 (Cartographic). SDV349431.

The earthworks do not correspond with any pit features shown in this location.

Environment Agency, 1998-2017, LiDAR DTM data (1m resolution) EA: South Devon Coast to Dartmoor, LIDAR SX5161 Environment Agency DTM 01-JAN-1998 to 31-MAY-2017 (Cartographic). SDV361470.

Earthworks of an ovoid pit with curvilinear outer banks are visible.

Harrison, D., 2017, Land at Woolwell Plymouth: Geophysical Survey (Report - Geophysical Survey). SDV361600.

A geophysical survey identified a sub-circular magnetic anomaly in this location (Field 37).

Orellana, J. + Clarke, P., 2018, Land at Woolwell, Plymouth, Devon. Archaeological Evaluation (Report - Evaluation). SDV361599.

A trench evaluation (Trench 24) in this location produced negative results.

Hegarty, C., Knight, S. and Sims, R., 2019-2020, The South Devon Coast to Dartmoor Aerial Investigation and Mapping Survey. Area 2, Avon Valley to Plymouth (AI&M, formerly NMP) (Interpretation). SDV362982.

Earthworks of an ovoid pit, circa 20m long by 18m wide, with outer curvilinear banks, circa 6m wide, are visible on visualisations derived from lidar data captured between 1998 and 2017. The visible earthworks do not correspond with any pit features depicted in this location on the mid-19th century Parish Tithe Map, or on later available historic maps. It does, however, correspond with a magnetic anomaly identified during a geophysical survey carried out in this area (Field 37). A subsequent trench evaluation carried out in 2017 (Trench 24) to target this anomaly produced negative results. The pit is nonetheless interpreted as a post-medieval or early 19th century extractive pit, with associated spoil, which had possibly passed out of use by the mid to late 19th century.
