A sub-circular pit, circa 8m diameter, is visible as an earthwork on visualisations derived from lidar data captured between 1998 and 2017. The visible earthwork corresponds with a circular feature labelled as ‘Old Shaft’ on the late 19th century First Edition Ordnance Survey map and as ‘Shafts (disused)’ on the Ordnance Survey MasterMap of 2019. The earthwork is therefore interpreted as a mid-19th century mine shaft probably associated with Wheal Lopes copper mine which had passed out of use by the late 19th century. The earthwork is also located amongst the more extensive earthwork remains of a medieval or post-medieval streamworks (MDV28705) and it should therefore be borne in mind that this pit may be in part or wholly the result of these earlier workings.
