Summary

Numerous small pits visible on the north-west facing slopes of Stewarts Hill, Shaugh Moor, on aerial photographs of 1946 are probably the remains of prospecting pits of medieval to post-medieval date. The earthworks have been largely destroyed by the expansion of Lee Moor Quarry.

Pits are visible as earthworks.

The earthworks have been destroyed by Lee Moor Quarry.

Numerous pits circa 1.5 to 5m across are visible as earthworks on aerial photographs of 1946 distributed over approximately 0.9ha of the north-west facing slopes of Stewarts Hill, Shaugh Moor.
The pits are interpreted as prospecting pits of medieval to post-medieval date.
A representative sample distribution of the smaller pits was transcribed with the probable full extent of earthworks indicated using an Extent of Feature polygon.
The earthworks have now been largely destroyed by the expansion of Lee Moor Quarry.
