Monument Type(s) and Dates

  • RECTILINEAR ENCLOSURE (Early Bronze Age to Late Iron Age - 2200 BC to 42 AD (Between))

Full description

Devon County Council, 1838-1848, Tithe Mosaic, approximately 1838-1848 (Cartographic). SDV349431.

The earthworks do not correspond with any linear or curvilinear features in this location.

Royal Air Force, 1964, RAF/58/6399, RAF/58/6399 F63 375-376 02-JUL-1964 (Aerial Photograph). SDV363068.

An L-shaped bank is visible as an earthwork.

Environment Agency, 1998-2017, LiDAR DTM data (1m resolution) EA: South Devon Coast to Dartmoor, LIDAR SX5064 Tellus DTM 01-JUL-2013 to 31-AUG-2013 (Cartographic). SDV361470.

A linear bank is possibly visible as an earthwork.

Hegarty, C., Knight, S. and Sims, R., 2019-2020, The South Devon Coast to Dartmoor Aerial Investigation and Mapping Survey. Area 2, Avon Valley to Plymouth (AI&M, formerly NMP) (Interpretation). SDV362982.

Earthwork banks, circa 3m wide, are visible on aerial photographs taken in 1964 and on visualisations derived from lidar data captured in 2013. The earthworks comprise an L-shaped bank and a possible linear bank which define three sides of a rectilinear enclosure which measures circa 35m across. Its south-eastern extent has been truncated by Devonport Leat (MDV19902). The enclosure does not correspond with features in this location on the mid-19th century Parish Tithe Map, or later available historic mapping. It is possibly associated with the late prehistoric field system recorded to the immediate west (MDV25635).
