Name:Deserted settlement of Whittaborough, Shaugh Prior

Summary

Earthwork hollows visible on aerial photographs of 1946 and visualisations derived from lidar data captured in 2013, are probably the remains of field boundaries and a farmyard associated with the possibly 17th century settlement of Whittaborough, Shaugh Prior. The farmstead was relocated circa 500m to the west in the mid to late 19th century.

Earthwork hollows visible on aerial photographs of 1946 correspond closely to field boundaries and a probable farmyard depicted on the Tithe Map for Shaugh Prior (plot
515, buildings and court) part of the settlement of Whittaborough.
The earthworks do not correspond with any features depicted on the Ordnance Survey 1880s First Edition 25inch map, the farmstead having been cleared and relocated by this date to a location circa 500m to the west, the current site of Whittaborough Farm.
The visible earthworks probably relate to the Whittaborough mentioned in an early 17th century deed, previously recorded in association with the 19th century farm.
The earthworks remain visible on visualisations derived from lidar data captured in 2013.
